Workshop Assistant
Full time | Monday–Friday, 8am–5pm | Kelvedon, Essex
£25,000–£28,000 depending on experience
Work with some seriously interesting cars!
Harvey Wash Ltd is a small, family-run workshop based just off the A12 in Kelvedon, Essex.
We are a Rolls-Royce and Bentley specialist, with nearly 50 years’ experience working on vehicles ranging from the 1920s through to the 2000s. Alongside our Rolls-Royce and Bentley work, we also look after a variety of other classic, specialist and modern vehicles.
We’re looking for a Workshop Assistant to join our small team.
This is a practical, hands-on role supporting our technicians and keeping the workshop running smoothly. We’re looking for someone who enjoys working around cars, takes pride in doing things properly and is keen to develop their mechanical knowledge and skills.
What you’ll be doing
You’ll be involved in the day-to-day running of the workshop, working alongside our experienced technicians.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Cleaning and preparing vehicles for client collection
- Cleaning, preparing and organising mechanical parts and components
- Assisting with the disassembly and reassembly of components
- Moving vehicles around the workshop and site
- Safely raising and supporting vehicles using workshop equipment, following our procedures
- Preparing vehicles and parts for technicians
- Collecting, checking and organising parts and materials
- Keeping the workshop, tools and equipment clean, tidy and organised
- Assisting technicians with mechanical work as your skills develop
- Carrying out basic workshop tasks and maintenance under instruction
- Helping wherever needed to keep jobs moving efficiently
The role will involve getting your hands dirty. You’ll be working with real cars and real mechanical jobs, rather than simply carrying out general cleaning or labouring duties.
Who we’re looking for
We’re looking for someone who is:
- Genuinely interested in cars, particularly classic and specialist vehicles
- Practical, hands-on and comfortable working with tools
- Reliable and hardworking
- Conscientious and willing to take pride in their work
- Naturally tidy and organised
- Able to follow instructions carefully, particularly when working with vehicles and workshop equipment
- Keen to learn and develop their mechanical knowledge
- Comfortable working as part of a small team
- Able to use their initiative and get on with a task once they’ve been shown what to do
Previous workshop, mechanical, engineering or vehicle experience would be an advantage, but we’re not expecting you to be a fully qualified mechanic.
We’re looking for someone who can contribute to the workshop from day one, but who also wants to develop their skills and take on more responsibility over time.
You will need to hold a full UK driving license.
Room to develop
This is not intended to be a role where you remain a workshop assistant indefinitely.
As you gain experience and demonstrate your ability, there will be opportunities to become involved in more involved mechanical work and take on greater responsibility.
For the right person, there is potential to progress into a more senior mechanical role over time.
We value people who want to learn, take responsibility and build their knowledge, and we’re happy to give the right person the opportunity to develop alongside the business.
A small team where everyone matters
We’re a small team, and that’s a big part of what makes Harvey Wash what it is. We work closely together, know each other well and genuinely look out for one another. Everyone has an important part to play, and we value people for what they bring to the workshop — their knowledge, ideas, skills and personality.
We’re looking for someone who wants to become part of that team, contribute to the workshop and build their knowledge alongside the people around them.
Why Harvey Wash?
You’ll get the chance to work around cars that you simply won’t see in an ordinary garage — from pre-war Rolls-Royces and Bentleys to classic and specialist cars from a variety of marques.
It’s a varied environment where you can learn how experienced technicians approach everything from routine maintenance to complex mechanical and restoration work.
Salary: £25,000–£28,000 per year, depending on experience.
If you’re practical, enthusiastic about cars and looking for a hands-on role in a genuinely specialist workshop, we’d love to hear from you.
